About Top 40 Search

Some of the first search engines developed used hit popularity as the primary tool to list search results.

The idea was simple - the best and most relevant websites for a search result are those which have received the most hits from similar searches by other users in the past.

One of the most successful of these was Direct Hit, which basically measures what people are clicking on and how long people are spending at the sites they visit at the major search engines. Direct Hit aimed to show you the most "popular" sites for various search topics. Today, the Direct Hit site itself no longer operates - it is a partner database used and shown in results by HotBot and Lycos. Other partners include MSN Search, LookSmart, and others.

Many people have become disillusioned with the search results from the major modern search engines such as Google and Yahoo for the following reasons.
